Me and Bill Clinton

Have you heard? Bill Clinton says that his new plant based diet is responsible for his 24 pound weight loss and more importantly his new lease on life. In case you didn’t know plant based diets have been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, keep your arteries healthy, prevent age related, lifestyle disease, some types of cancer and more. It is better than anything you can buy and apparently everyone is jumping on the band wagon.

The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper, the latest Men’s Journal and now CNN are all reporting on the next best thing – being a vegan! Actually Men’s Journal refers to it as “The Rise of the Power Vegan” with Scott Jurek, winner of 7 and record setter in ultramarathons, George Laroque, Montreal Canadians winger, Brendan Brazier, Ironman Triathlete, Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons, Tight End, Bill Clinton and me are all semi – vegans. FYI to be a strict vegan you can not eat anything made by or from an animal (that includes honey and disclaimer I do occasionally eat honey and I wasn’t referenced in the Men’s Journal article either)

Until now I was an oddity. Do you know how many times I have been asked why I don’t eat meat? No offense, but why is it always while someone is eating something meaty? Probably this is not the time you want to know. I don’t eat meat because I want to take care of myself, the planet and all life on it. I believe conscious choices are the best way to live my life. Conscious choices doesn’t mean that you need to be a vegan. It means that you know where your food comes from, you understand the cost of your purchases and how it affects your life.

Today Bill Clinton endorsed a plant based diet because vegan diets have been proven to reverse heart disease. Surprised? This is not new. We have known this for years. This is proven. It just not popular, it is not a quick fix. And I think we all understand that the quick fix isn’t working anymore.

In fact everyone who know me knows that I am not going to ask you to eat organic, eat local, eat less. That is what I try to do. And I have good reasons for doing all of this. But, what I would ask is that you make choices based on a commitment to your health, to make sustainable choices, to do the best you can. I would like you to truly understand where your food comes from. To be informed and to make a conscious, educated choice.

I was very excited to hear Bill state in no uncertain terms on CNN that he was prepared to take care of his health and be responsible for his choices! Wow. Amazing. Fabulous. What a day. And speaking of days today is World Vegetarian Day. So celebrate your health, the health of the world, celebrate life, all life and have a veggie burger and think of me and Bill.

To your health,

Shayla

Shayla….good read. I was given a copy of Michael Pollan’s “In Defense of Food”
I will definitely read it now and consider my diet.

Hi Shayla!(and Brad) Hope you are both well!!! BILL CLINTON!!!!!!!! Shocked to see you linking your name with his Shayla!!!!! Let’s discuss his ethical and moral stance at a later date, dear friend. Clean eating is the least of his problems as you no doubt agree. I know I should be on the treadmill, lifting weights, etc. while we discuss this very weighty issue. However it did grab my attention and might even prompt me to call you for a much needed nudge in the right exercise direction.
Happy October 1 and enjoy the glorious weather!

That’s what we had for dinner tonight — vegan. How is the home made bread?

  4. Shayla says:

Great, thank you, and I am glad to hear that you are eating vegan too!

    Hi Judy,
We are well thanks, I hope you both are well too. I would love to nudge you in the right direction. I will be happy if everyone started with clean eating and then we can work everything else.
    Have a great weekend,
    Shayla

    Hi Betti,
Another good book is “Food Inc” and one of my all time favourites in Marion Nestle’s “What to Eat”.
    Enjoy,

Becoming vegan – interesting – saw Bill on telly and thought “wow, he does look different, and quite skinny.” shocked and awed that he endorsed a vegan diet – after all this is the big red man photoed many times with a big mac in hand and mouth simultaneously – good on him for taking the steps to change his life and health. it seems we all get smarter at some point in our lives. I am becoming vegan out of sheer laziness – and reaping the health benefits at the same time!! I hate to cook and find that doing a big cook of veggies and quinoa or veggies and rice or veggies and pasta one or two nights, makes it so simple for the rest of the week’s dinners. And becoming lactose intolerant means I’m not eating the dairy I used to enjoy before…. hopefully I will also reverse years of flesh eating damage to arteries and G.I. bits and pieces.
